Welcome to the Outreach to the Community Blog!

At Avalon Church we believe that acts of kindness done with great love will transform a community. Our vision is to the command of Jesus to love God and our neighbor. While the acts of kindness will stand on their own merit, ultimately, we want people to open their hearts to Jesus Christ. Thanks for checking out this outreach opportunity. We hope you will join us in offering HOPE to our community.

Outreach to Henry Medical Center

Hearing one of the most touching stories ever during Second Serve.

James Forsythe

What an amazing day!!! I had such a wonderful time passing out the gift bags to people in need at Henry Medical Center. I went during the second service and we heard some very touching stories. One guy shared his miracle with us. He met a complete stranger who donated her kidney to him! The story is more in depth, but the amazing thing was how touched this man was and he knew that this miracle was something God did for him.

Serving others and serving God, that's what it's all about!

This was my first experience going out into the community with Second Serve (during the 11:30 service) and I loved it!

Four days ago a friend of mine had a baby and the little girl has been in the NICU since then. I really wanted to go and visit, and have prayer with the parents. On the way into the hospital Melissa, Paul, James, Allison and I actually ran into them waiting for the elevator as they were on the way back to the NICU. Turns out the group who went during the 10:15 service had already met and ministered to them. They even still had their bag of snacks in-hand! We then had a time of prayer with them before going to the ER.

Prior to the experience I think I was a bit nervous about how offering to pray with a complete stranger would be received. But now I know that God had my friends waiting at that elevator not only so that we could minister to them, but to also help ease me into the experience and become more comfortable with meeting and praying with the others I did not know.

We had a wonderful time today going to Henry Co. Hospital waiting rooms - Critical Care, Labor and Delivery/NICU, and the Emergency Room. People were so receptive to the gift bags and we prayed for several people. It was awesome! Make sure and check out the pictures.

Next time will be Second Sunday in February, so stay tuned for updates!
*Anyone who went today, please post something here that touched your heart so all can hear

I am as well always amazed at how receptive people are. It reminds me how much a hurting world needs the Lord. What a priviledge it is to be able to go out and serve in this way! Each time I am so touched and blessed. I am like you Melissa, I want everyone to get in on the blessings and not to miss the fun. We will also pray for the mother in law. LOL (and the not so receptive one)

It really was a great time. The next outreach will be on February 8 during both the 10:15am and 11:30am services. We will be going to the nursing home and passing out valentines made by our kids in Kidstown plus giving something special to those that work in the home. It will be an opportunity to bless and pray for a often neglected part of our society, so come on out!

Back Pack Giveaway and Kidz Blitz

We had a very successful day on July 21st. Over 600 registered, parents and kids, and we gave away most of the 500 book bags. Even better there were 40+ decisions to accept Christ!

Of course there were hundreds of volunteers that helped out and the HOPE and Kids leadership did an awesome job on this event.

We will start our servant evangelism outreaches back on Sunday, August 10th during the 10:15am and 11:30am services. It's plenty hot and perfect time for a bottled water giveaway. So come join us!

Invitations Given!

This past Saturday Avalon folks went to five area neighborhoods and invited the community to our KID'S BLITZ and book bag giveaway(www.avalonhope.net/Backpack_Giveaway.html). It was a great time! I'm amazed at the faithfulness and determination of our people to get out the word for such a great event. One group was in Skyland Trailer Park from 10:30am to almost 3:00pm. The whole area was covered and that was lots of area!

We also went to the area behind Wal-Mart in McDonough, the Phillips drive area, and two more neighborhoods in Locust Grove.

The Kids Blitz and book bag giveaway will be on July 19th. We will participate in this and our next Servant Evangelism outreach will be on August 10th.

Mother's Day Flower Give-a-way

We gave flowers to Moms and then another for them to give to a Mom as they went about their Day. We'll report the stories as they come in to us.
We will not do another SE outreach until August. On June 21st we will go canvass neighborhoods for the book bag give-a-way. This will be our organized outreach for the month of June. So make plans to come join us as we offer hope to our community getting their kids ready for the 2008-2009 school year.

Free Stamps!

The stamp giveaway was a raving success! This time was different for all because we did it on a Tuesday afternoon, April 15, rather than a Sunday. The post offices were all buzzing with activity and people who were caught off guard by a small gesture of love – a free stamp. People were shocked! More than any other outreach, people repeatedly asked us, “Free? Why?” or “Why would you do this?” We were able to tell them we just wanted to show them God’s love in a practical way…..no strings attached. Free! People opened up, smiled, and many were blessed twice as they were able to get out of the long lines. One lady asked for prayer because she is new to the area and needs to find a job. Another lady told about how her husband was a pastor for years, but had a stroke in 2000, so now her life is spent taking care of him, and she asked for prayer.

Special thanks to those who baked cakes for the postal workers. They were shocked and happy to have a small token of appreciation from our church. The worker at the McDonough Post Office yelled across to the other workers, “Hey, Avalon Church brought us cake!”

Small things done with great love are changing our community.
